In the design world, Lee Mayer is a much-needed breath of fresh air. She’s the CEO of Havenly, an affordable online interior design service, and has turned it from a start-up into a multi-million dollar company in just a few years.
Leaving Harvard Business School, she began her illustrious career at Canon, working in planning and development before moving on to Bain & Company. Before taking the plunge and starting Havenly, she was the Vice President for the auto insurance division at Bankrate.
We hear you ask: what’s this got to do with interior design? We’ll tell you. Havenly, like any other good invention, was born out of necessity. In 2013, Lee was overwhelmed when it came to decorating her home. Finding a reasonably priced professional designer seemed like an impossible task. Realising she was not alone in struggling to find a service that was inexpensive and convenient, Havenly was born.
Lee’s company is a product of intuition and ingenuity, but she admits that she’s a risk-averse person. It was a big step for her to leave her position at Bankrate and head out into the world of entrepreneurship, but unable to stop thinking of Havenly’s potential she took a leap of faith and hasn’t looked back since. It’s now grown to over 300 employees and last year they raised $32million to begin their own product line.
Lee’s story shows that commitment and believing in yourself and your vision will pay off, and that makes her an inspiration.
